26 Oct 1962: Tonijn is laid down at the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard in Schiedam.

1965

14 June 1965: Tonijn is launched.

1966

24 Feb 1966: Tonijn is commissioned to the Royal Netherlands Navy.

16 Dec 1968: Tonijn, exercising North West of Ireland, participates in the search for the missing submarine Walrus (1).

18 Jul - 28 Jul 1976: Tonijn visits Kiel (Germany) and participates in the Kieler Woche.
 

11 Sep - 14 Sep 1976: Tonijn visits Dublin (Ireland).

1977

30 Apr 1977: Off the Shetlands the Tonijn transfers some officers to the Zeehond (3) in order to drink an 'oranjebitter' and celebrate Queensday.

1978

18 Sep 1978 - 17 Dec 1980: Tonijn is under the command of .

1979

Sep 1979: Tonijn experiences a fire in the port engine room, two hours later there is another fire in the starboard engine room. Because the submarine is also conducting a 'battery depletion' there is only 10% battery power left.  So the Tonijn almost loses power completely while on route to Naples, Italy. The USS Harlan County (LST-1196) leaves Cartagena (Spain) in order to provide towing assistance to Gibraltar.

16 Oct - 11 Dec 1979: Tonijn is dry-docked in Rotterdam for a refit. Among other things the M.A.N diesels are replaced by SEMPT-Pielstick diesels.

26 June 1981 - 1 Aug 1982: Tonijn is under the command of .

1982

May 1982 - 9 Jan 1984: Tonijn is under the command of .

1983

30 Apr - 4 May 1983: Tonijn visits Dublin (Ireland)

1984

In the spring of 1984 Tonijn makes a trip (of only one month) to Plymouth in order to exercise with surface vessels, Zeebrugge to exercise with Van Speijk and Wielingen, Copenhagen to celebrate the Danish submarine anniversary.

9 Jan 1984 - 1 Nov 1984: Tonijn is under the command of .

1985

Because of the delays caused by the Walrus (2) fire, the submarines Zeehond (3), Potvis and Tonijn will all serve longer than planned.

13 Sep 1985 - 20 Dec 1987: Tonijn is under the command of .

1988

15 July 1988 - 20 Dec 1988: Tonijn is under the command of .

20 Dec 1988 - 1 Jul 1990: Tonijn is under the command of .

1 Jul 1990 - 10 Jan 1991: Tonijn is under the command of .

25 - 26 Aug 1990: Tonijn visits Norway, port unknown.

26 - 29 Oct 1990: Tonijn visits Faslane (Scotland).

1991

10 Jan 1991: Tonijn  is decommissioned.

30 Jan 1991: Tonijn is towed from Den Helder to Rotterdam.

31 Jan 1991 - 21 Apr 1992: Tonijn is "in consignatie" at the RDM yard in Rotterdam.

9 Jan 1993: The Tonijn is moved to dock VI and put on a pontoon.

12 Jan 1993: The Tonijn is lifted from the pontoon and put next to the Den Helder Navy Museum. Since the summer of 1994 she is open to the public at the Den Helder Navy Museum.
