The computer model MORSE (Maritime Operational Research into Submarine Evaluation) has been developed by TNO (a Dutch organization) in order to support the introduction and operations of the Walrus (2) class submarines into the Royal Netherlands Navy (25 April 1990). The model is able to simulate an encounter between a Walrus (2) class submarine and other subsurface and/or surface unit. The model represents the phases of the encounter from initial search andDetection and Counter Detection Rangesdetection, through classification, Target/Contact Motion Analysis (TMA) and intercept to the actual launching of the weapon. Emphasis in the model lies on the Walrus (2). The Walrus (2) has been modelled in full detail, with respect to platform characteristics as well as its sensor and weapon systems.

To achieve a maximum of flexibility, the MORSE program is modular and built around an extensive Database in which the various environment, platform, sensor and weapon characteristics are stored.

The model has already been used to conduct simulation runs to support the evaluation of the Walrus (2) class submarines. The model, validated with observations carried out during various evaluation exercises, is presently used to assess the effectiveness of various tactics or doctrines.

MORSE Applications:

  1. Investigation and Development of Search and Approach Tactics
  2. Investigation of Target Motion Analysis methods
  3. Research on the effectiveness of new weapons, sonars, and other systems
  4. Prediction Program of Detection and Counter detection Ranges

You can get a feel for the MORSE program by playing submarine hide and seek at the TNO-FEL site. They try to keep the server up, but the connection gets lost sometimes.
