R&D ESGA prototype |
|
This is a Dutch system, that will support sonar operators, it is not intended to replace sonar operators or to automate sonar-contact identification but will be used to assist the sonar operator.
The ESGA system will 'check' a sonar diagram and will provide the sonar operator a list of vessels that could be the source of the noise. The program can be spilt-up in three parts: Detection, classification and identification.
The detection part consists of a complex filter that detects frequency lines.
The classification part in its turn will try to locate the harmonic frequency's and the possible source. Every presented 'line' will be accompanied with several data, like number (when part of an array) and 'form'-identification. This information can be used to track thing like the number of cylinders or the number of propeller blades.
The identification part of ESGA will identify the source. The system uses the CODA (Dutch Centre for Operational Data and Analyses) database.
The ESGA system can be used on board surface vessels, airplanes as well as submarines.
During the following years the system will be improved (including shallow water performance) and expanded (more sound characteristics).
