Tenders in the 1920's

From 1 March to 28 May 1925 a Dutch naval group made a trip to the Groote Oost (Large East / Eastern part of the Dutch East Indies Archipelago). The group consisted of the submarine tender Pelikaan (under the command of Kapt.ltz. Wissmann), mine layer Krakatau and the submarine division. The submarine division consisted of K II, K VII, K VIII and K IX. Pelikaan had the following aircraft on board W-2, W-8 and W-12a. During this trip the group probably also visited Ambon. Piet Lootsma his photos are probably made during this this trip.

'Audience' around the float plane W-8, one of Pelikaan's ship board aircraft. This W-8 is a type Van Berkel WA float plane, which were the ship board reconnaissance aircraft for several Dutch cruisers and destroyers. They were delivered in the East Indies between Oct 1919 and July 1920. This W-8 should not be confused with the W-8 from the 1930's, which was a type Fokker C-XI W float plane.
