COLOMBO SUBMARINE PATROL ORDER NUMBER 9.
Order for patrol by H.N.M. Submarine O 23 in the
Northern part of the MALACCA STRAIT.
(Short Title - C.S.P.9)
H.N.M.S/M O 23 la to proceed from COLOMBO to carry out a
patrol in the Northern part of the MALACCA STRAIT in accordance with the
following instruct ions.
2. TIME AND DATE Of SAILING. 1130z 19th July, 1942.
Colombo Submarine Sanctuary will be in force from 1130z to 1430z on
19th July.
3. OBJECT.
To attack enemy forces reporting any important forces sighted.
4. PRIORITY OF TARGETS.
Should choice of targets be presented, the order of priority is to is
to be:
(i) Aircraft carriers
(ii) Capital ships
(iii) Large transports
5. PATROL ZONE.
Patrol zone is bounded as follows:
Between latitudes 005 degrees 00 minutes and 006 degrees 20 minutes
North en Eastwards from longitude 098 degrees 30 minutes East to the
coast.
6. ROUTE TO PATROL.
By Q.C.A. 390, thence through positions:
G. 005 degs. 30 min. North; 079 degs. 45 min East
H. 005 degs. 08 min. North. 082 degs. 42 min. East
I. 005 degs. 14 min. North; 086 degs. 56 min. East
J. 005 degs. 32 min. North» 092 degs. 58 min. East
thence North of PULO WEH to patrol, keeping South of line joining
positions 006 degs. 40 min. North; 095 degs. 00 min. East and 005 degs.
50 min. North; 094 degs. 08 min. East.
7. PASSAGE TO PATROL.
At Commanding Officer's discretion on the surface to
position J, thence diving during daylight.
Total Bombing Restrictions are in force as requested in S.O.S/M
Colombo's 0831z 17th July.
8. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS.
(i) A.F.O. 419/42 and Admiralty Message 895 A of 2015 26th June list
I the Japanese ships notified as being employed as Hospital ships In the
"sink at sight" area all other ships may be attacked.
(ii) On return passage O 23 is to pass close to the Northward of PULO
WEH during daylight to reconnoiter the vicinity of SABANG.
(iii) The report after leaving patrol, ordered by S/M P?C.2(a) is not to
be made unless O 23 has anything of importance to report.
9. LEAVING PATROL.
Should no order to the contrary be received, O 23 is to leave patrol
after dark on 1st August and return to COLOMBO.
10. ROUTE FOR RETURN.
By outward route reversed.
11. RETURN PASSAGE.
Diving during daylight until position J is reached, thereafter on the
surface at Commanding Officer's discretion.
Total Bombing Restrictions will be imposed from position J; the times of
these restrictions will be signalled.
12. TIME OF ARRIVAL AT COLOMBO.
The time at which O 23 is expected to arrive at COLOMBO will be
signalled. W/T silence is not to be broken to report unless this time
requires amendment.
13. INFORMATION OF ENEMY FORCES.
Issued separately to Commanding Officer, O 23 only.
14. INFORMATION OF OWN FORCES.
H.M.S. TRUSTY now on patrol in vicinity of SAYER ISLANDS North of
latitude 008 degrees 00 minutes and East of Longitude 096 degrees 30
minutes East leaves patrol after dark on 24th July to return to COLOMBO
routed through following positions:
E. 006 degs. 25 min. North; 092 degs. 10 min. East
D. 005 degs. 56 min. North; 086 degs. 04 min. East
C. 005 degs. 30 min. North; 081 degs. 56 min. East
B. 005 degs. 26 min. North; 080 degs. 54 min. East
A. 005 degs, 39 min, North; 079 degs. 48 min. East
Other information will be supplied direct to O 23 from the office of
the Flag Officer. Ceylon.
