Oct 2000

COOPERATIVE POSEIDON is a Partnership for Peace (PfP) Exercise consisting of Seminars (Workshop), Tactical Floor and Computer Assisted Safety Training. It will begin 27- 31 March 2000 with Phase I in Stockholm/Sweden. Phase II will be held in Den Helder/The Netherlands from 9 to 13 October 2000.

The purpose of the exercise is to promote a common understanding of submarine safety by familiarising Partner Nations with the NATO submarine and anti submarine warfare safety regime. This is required before conducting exercises involving Partner Nations submarines, ships, helicopters and aircraft. The aim is to adopt common procedures and understanding with regard to safety in order to minimise the risk of submarine accidents. This is the second time such an exercise has been run.

The Exercise has been designed for the Submarine Command Teams of PfP nations, in particular: Commanding Officers (CO), Executive Officers (XO), Operations Officers (OPS), Officers of the Watch (OOW) and National Submarine Operating and Training Staffs as appropriate. In addition officers from surface ships, helicopters and aircraft will attend.

As well as gaining a thorough understanding of the NATO submarine safety regime and safety doctrines, there will also be the opportunity to exchange information on submarine operations with regards to general safety, navigation, OOW duties etc. Also on how COs, command teams and crews are trained in safety aspects.

A total of 15 NATO and 31 Partner officers will take part in this ground breaking cooperative exercise.
