Den Helder, Netherlands, 1947

Inaugurated on 20 June 1947. Originally only to commemorate the Dutch submariners lost at sea. The monument was built in Rotterdam, but in 1962 it was moved (Because the Submarine Service moved) to Den Helder, after the move the plaques were also re-arranged. On  4 June 1968 two bronze plaques where attached to the 'back' of the 'wall'. One plaque displays the text "Ja Het Moest" and the other plaque displays the silhouette of a sinking submarine. The two plaques at the left and right of the main 'wall' were added later and list the names of submariners that were lost while not being at sea. Most of those died in Japanese captivity. Seal Rocks, Australia, 2001

The plaque commemorates the service of the K IX as a member of the allied fleet in the Pacific campaigns of World War Two. It also recalls the submarines’ service as a unit of the Royal Australian Navy between 1943-1944 - the only Australian submarine commissioned during the war.  . . . . more info.
