In his book "De Koninklijke Marine in de Tweede Wereldoorlog -deel 3" dr. Ph.M. Bosscher writes:  " ....The result of the evacuation in may 1940 is highly influenced by the prosperity of some commanders in carrying out  their orders. For this fact one name may certainly  be mentioned that off kaptz. C. Hellingman, Naval Commander of the Position IJmuiden. He positively influenced the evacuation by playing  a highly risky game in carrying out destroying and blocking activities, hours after the Dutch Capitulation...."
