Notes Single-hull type, three main ballast tanks. Boat divided in watertight compartments with watertight doors. Because the German M.A.N. engine factory was to busy with her war contracts the M.A.N. diesels were installed and completed by the K.M.S. shipyard. This is why the K II, which was launched before the K III boats, commissioned after the K III class.

There are reports of snorting, at low speed, with K II type boats dating from as early as 1923/24. These boats had a "diesel air intake" that could be positioned above the wave breaker of the periscope. This intake was originally designed for use during bad weather when the sub was surfaced but the hatches had to be closed. Because of the inadequate valve system (to keep water out) this system did not perform well. See the O 2, O 16 and O 19 class for more snort info.
