In this well researched book I (Michael Wilson) describe the operations of the submarines of the British, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese and US Navies in the Indian Ocean during WW2.  Not all the patrols which took place could be covered in a book of this size, but I have chosen a representative selection to show the way the various nations operated their boats and the Commanding Officers fought their war.

The Dutch boats are well reported during the tragic early days of the war in the Far East, through to the escape of the survivors to Australia or Ceylon. The story is followed as the K XII carries out special operations to land parties back in Java, and the other Dutch boats work with the British from Trincomalee. By the end of the war the Dutch submariners had established a fine professional reputation working both from Fremantle and Ceylon.

I also try to establish the reason why just one American submarine was sent to patrol off the Malayan coast and was lost there.

An interesting and well illustrated book covering many less well known events for both the submarine enthusiast and for the general reader.
